Grand Rapids, MI—The Raiders are on a roll, and have now won 10 straight games. After facing some tough competition down in Florida, the guys are approaching the .500 mark and are 15-16 on the season. GRCC earned a pair of victories against St Clair Community College on Thursday, and are preparing to take on the Vikings of Glen Oaks tomorrow afternoon.
The Raiders marched into Port Huron with a mission; prove that they are worthy of the preseason top 20 ranking, and prove that they did.
With a good deal of offense, and some sound defensive play the Raiders topped SCCC by a score of 7-1 in the opening round of a double header. The guys scored a pair of runs in the first inning, the first run coming when Carlos Berroa scored on an EJ Grochowalski double and the second when Brendan Bender reached home on a Brian Portelli single. The 2 runs would put GRCC ahead for the rest of play.
Brian Portelli had 4 of the Raiders 11 hits during the game, and teammates Carlos Berroa and Kyle Orlowski each earned a pair. Seven different Raiders earned an RBI.
Brendan Bender pitched all seven innings for his team, earning 5 strikeouts while allowing only 5 hits and 1 run along the way.
The second round of play was more of the same. GRCC got on board first when David Balgaard reached home on an error in the third. The guys earned their second run of the game, a run that sealed their victory, when Mike Battistelliscored on a Drew Dunbar sac-fly.
Aaron Jensen threw for just over 6 innings for the Raiders before Eric Musselman stepped in to close out play. Jensen had 9 strikeouts in the victory.
The Raiders take the road tomorrow afternoon when they head down south to Centreville, Michigan to take on Glen Oaks Community College. With a pair of victories, the guys could climb above the .500 mark for the first time this season. Stay tuned to grccraiders.com for further coverage.
