Softball downs Lansing

Lansing, Mich. -- GRCC's softball team defeated Lansing CC 3-0 and 13-11 improving to 22-13 overall and 13-7 in the MCCAA West.  The win is the Raiders fourth consecutive win following two wins over Jackson CC last Saturday.

In the first game of the double header the Raiders were led by Kaitlyn Schneider who went 3-for-4  with 1 run and 1 RBI.  Brenna Donahue, now back in action, delivered a key RBI while going 1-for-4 in the game and Kelsey Caposey swung the bat well going 2-for-3.

Lansing's Stars struggled against GRCC's Kayla Goodwin who pitched 7 innings with 1 strike out for the win.

In the second game the action picked up as the teams combine for 30 hits and 24 runs.  Down 6-0 in the bottom of the 3rd the Stars went berzerk at the plate scoring 9 runs on six hits to go up by three. 

The Raiders responded in the top of the 4th delivering 7 runs of their own on 6 hits.  Megan Galganski delivered a grand slam to put the Raiders up by 1, 10-9.  Chelsea Hutchison caught the fever late in the inning delivering her own two run homer to pad GRCC's lead, 13-9.

Lansing added a run in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Raiders held on for the 13-11 win. 

Kayla Goodwin earned a second win for GRCC after taking the mound for Casey Cherry in the third.  Cherry pitched 2.2 innings with 2 strikeouts giving up six hits with seven earned runs.  Goodwin struck out 4 batters in 4.1 innings while giving up five runs.

Raiders Chelsea Hutchison, Megan Galganski and Danielle Goad lit it up for GRCC as each delivered a homer on the path to victory.  Galganski went 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs while Hutchison drove in 4 RBIs of her own with 2 runs and three hits on 5 at bats.  Goad was3-for-5 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs of her own and set the tone for the second game with her two run home coming in the first inning.

Next up for the Raiders are the Cougars of Kalamazoo Valley, currently ranked 12th in the nation, who brought an end to the Raiders 14 game win streak two weeks ago.  Since the two teams first met this year, the Cougars are 9-1 and riding a 9 game win streak.  GRCC's opportunity to even out with Kalamazoo in 2012 is knocking at the Raider's front door as the teams will square off at Belknap park Friday April 20th at 3:00PM.
