Softball knocks off NCAA DII Bemidji State 9-8

Clermont, FL -- GRCC's Raider softball team came out swingng--and hitting--as they took on NCAA Division II Bemidji State (MN) yesterday knocking them off 9-8.  The win extends GRCC's win streak to 6 games following a five game losing streak to start the season.

GRCC's Raider offense was fired up from the moment they stepped in the batter's box as Chelsea Hutchison hit a tripple to right field to open the bottom of the first.  Kaitlyn Schneider took a walk, and Brenna Donahue struck out looking leaving the Raiders with one out and a runner on third.  Schneider advanced to second on a wild pitch to Tiffanie Wolan who eventually doubled sending Schneider and Hutchinson home. Megan Galganski popped up for the second out and Sarah Goudey grounded out to third to finish the inning putting the Raiders up 2-0.

The Raiders scored one run in the second as while the Beavers remained hitless through three innings, but GRCC continued to fuel their offense in the third. Five Raiders scored on five hits in the third as Chelsea Hutchinson trippled again for three RBIs.

The fourth inning was quiet for both the Raiders and the Beavers as the score remained 8-0 in the Raiders favor.

Down but not out, Bemidji State stared the fifth inning with only one hit, but put on quite a show.  Six Beaver hits and 3 Raider errors led to 8 runs  tying the game at 8-8 for the bottom of the fifth inning.   Casey Swink opened the side with a fly out to center field. Danielle Goad doubled to left center  and Kelsey Caposey followed with a single to third advancing Goad to third and bringing Chelsea Hutchison to the plate.   While unable to deliver another tripple, Hutchinson singled to send Danielle home, the game winning run, to give the Raiders a 9-8 lead. 

Both teams left two on base in the sixth.  In the seventh the Beavers had one hit and a runner on third but couldn't had exhaughsted their offense with a ground out to second to end the game.

Hutchison finished the game having gone an asounding 4-for-4 with 2 tripples and 5 RBIs.  Schneider went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Swink earned her first win pitching for the Raiders.  Kayla Goodwin pitched 4.2 innings with two earned runs and two strikeouts, and Emily Karbutowski got the save pitching one inning with no hits and one strikeout.

GRCC looks to extend their win streak to eight in a row today as they face St. Clair County Community College at 11:00AM and then Neumann Univeristy JV (PA) at 1:00PM.
