Grand Rapids, MI – GRCC’s Raider softball team is prepared to keep their 12 game win streak alive going into this weekend’s double-headers against #19
th ranked Kalamazoo Valley and Glen Oaks.
GRCC’s Head Softball Coach, Paula Maloley, is proud of her team’s effort thus far. “We are working very hard as a team--no matter what each player’s role is on any given day. This team has never given up and plays with intensity each time we take the field. We have had several come from behind victories. I’m very proud of that.”
The Raiders will need to maintain that same intensity and perseverance going into tomorrow’s games against the Cougars of Kalamazoo Valley. KVCC boasts the 2011 MCCAA title and is returning 6 sophomores to the Raiders 3.
What the Raiders may lack in sophomores they are making up for with outstanding team play. Freshman
Kaitlyn Schneider has posted some impressive figures thus far in 2012 with a .467 batting average, 21 RBIs, 7 doubles and one home run. “Her hitting and catching in clutch situations has been incredible,” Said Maloley.
Freshman
Kelsey Caposey and
Chelsea Hutchison have also delivered while at the plate.
Caposey is a force on the base paths. So far she has a .459 batting average, 5 stolen bases and 21 runs.
Hutchison is a solid leadoff hitter batting .407 with 5 doubles, 2 triples, 1 home run and 16 RBIs.
GRCC’s pitching staff is owed credit as well according to Coach Maloley. “Our pitchers have done a great job.
Casey Cherry pitched a solid seven innings against Lansing CC. She went the distance and got the win.”
Cherry is 4-1 in 2011 with 25 strikeouts and a 2.39 ERA in 29.1 innings.
The Raiders have no expectation of simply riding their momentum to leave with a victory over KVCC. The same hard work and intensity that helped them earn their last 12 wins will be needed to keep their streak alive.
The Raiders travel to Kalamazoo tomorrow to face Kalamazoo Valley (7-4) in a doubleheader at 3:00PM. On Saturday GRCC will host Glen Oaks (0-2) in a doubleheader starting at 1:00PM.
** The double header between GRCC and KVCC has been postponed due to the rain.
