Grand Rapids, MI—The Raiders have extended their win streak to 12 on Tuesday. The girls earned a pair of victories over the Stars of Lansing Community College, 12-10 in the first game and 9-3 in the second.
The first game saw some tight competition between the 2 teams, with both teams taking the lead at a couple of points during the game.
After both teams earned a single run in the first inning, GRCC grabbed the lead in the third inning when Kelsey Caposey scored on a Lansing CC Fielding error. The lead, however, would be very short lived.
Down by a single run in the top of the fourth, Lansing’s batters stepped to the plate with some serious determination. The Stars had 3 hits and scored 5 times to go up 6-2 before the inning was up.
Determined to keep their winning streak alive, GRCC went on a tear. Danielle Goad delivered a 2 run home run during the inning to help gain the Raiders 4 runs and making it a 6-6 game after 5 innings. GRCC had three hits during the inning and capitalized on a pair of Stars errors.
The team continued to operate as an offense machine in the sixth inning and added another 6 runs. With a 12-6 lead heading into the final inning of play, the Raiders had all but sealed their victory.
Despite a solid effort by Lansing in last inning, an inning that saw the Stars add another 4 runs, the Raiders emerged victorious. Starting pitcher Kayla Goodwin, who was relieved by two other Raiders came back in the game with the tying run at the plate, only to have Lansing pop up and ground out to end the threat. Goodwin picked up her first save of the season, while Emily Karbutowksi (5-1) earned the victory.
Casey Cherry earned the win in the second game for the Raiders. She pitched 7 innings and allowed only 2 hits. Lansing batters struggled heavily against Cherry, with 1 in 3 striking out as the Raiders cruised by on their way to a 9-3 victory.
Leading the Raiders offensive charge was Danielle Goad with 4 RBI. Goad hit her second homer of the day (a grand slam in the 4th inning), turning a 4-3 game into an 8-3 game, and seal the deal for the Raiders win. Tiani Beck had a pair of hits and 6 other Raiders had hits during the game.
Catcher Tiffanie Wolan led her squad with 8 putouts followed by teammate Megan Galganski with 6.
The women have now won 12 straight games and are 12-5 on the season. The 12-5 record includes a perfect 4-0 record in conference play and a flawless 2-0 record both home and away. The 5 losses have come on neutral ground.
The team will take the diamond next when they head south to Kalamazoo on Friday to take on the #17 ranked cougars. The girls will hope to earn their 13th and 14th straight victory on the season. Stay tuned to GRCCRaiders.com for further coverage.
