Raiders down Aquinas in a close one

Grand Rapids, MI—The Raiders saw their record improve to 5-14 on the season with a win over Aquinas College yesterday. The guys won by a slim margin of 10-8. GRCC faced off against the Saints after falling to them 7-14 just 4 days prior.

The Raiders earned a pair of run, but GRCC found themselves in a hole early on after allowing 3 runs in the bottom of the first, one of which was unearned. A costly error by third baseman Ron Sanders sent Elliot Drain in for the Saints, and put two other runners in scoring position. Greg Baranyai and Jimmy McDonagh both scored before the inning was over.

Aquinas added another couple of runs when Tanner Lung homered in the second. Teammate Kenneth Hartger also scored on the play. The Raiders downed the next 3 batters to end the second inning, down by a score of 5-2.

David Frederick stepped in to take over pitching duties for the Raiders in the third inning. The Saints first 3 batters got on base and would eventually score, giving the Saints an 8-4 advantage.

First baseman EJ Grochowalski scored in the third, before the Raiders capitalized on a Saints error in the fourth. Christian Lienesch scored on an error by Jimmy McDonagh and 2 Raiders entered into scoring position. Jared Theissen hit for a single and earned 2 RBI’s to drive Tyler Duke and Mike Battistelli in.

The Raiders added another run in the sixth, and took the lead in the seventh. With some strong pitching and fielding, the Raiders held Aquinas off of the scoreboard for the rest of the game.

Jared Theissen had 3 hits and 3 RBI’s during the game to lead the Raiders offensive charge, and Ron Sanders had 1 hit for 2 RBI’s. Brandon Seekell earned the W for the Raiders.

Next up, the Raiders host Mott Community College. With high expectations heading into the season, the Raiders should have a strong outing from this point out.
