BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The slumping Raiders needed a couple wins badly and that’s exactly what they came away with at Bailey Park, the home of the 2011 District G Tournament. The Raiders had lost 6 in a row coming in to today, but left the complex with 8-4 and 10-1 victories.

In game one, the visiting Raiders scored the first two runs of the game on a homerun by freshman Kellen Dewey in the top of the 2nd inning. Dewey would go on to hit a total of 3 homeruns on the day, making it 4 for the entire season.

With GRCC up 5-0 in the bottom of the 4th inning, sophomore Ashley Raap gave up a two run homer of her own to 1st baseman Paige Richmond. Richmond added another homer in the bottom of the 6th inning making it an 8 to 4 game and the Bruins (12-6, 6-4) weren’t done yet.

GRCC had no errors in the first 6 innings, but in the bottom of the 7th inning, errors almost hurt the Raiders. Adrienne Palmer dropped a foul ball by Emily Butts whom would later reach on a single to lead it off for Kellogg. The next batter popped out to Alison Iuelle, but then came up the leadoff hitter. Left fielder Lindsey Schroedter (who was 2-3 with 2 RBI) had two errors on the play and left runners on 2nd and 3rd. Sophomore Minda Martinez who reached base her first three times then came up to bat. The Raiders brought in freshman Allie Annese to see if she could finish the Bruins off. Martinez lined out to short and Dani Gremel popped out to Marlene Packer to end the game. Annese earned her 2nd save of the season.

The Raiders (10-14, 4-6) finished the game with 10 hits, lead bySchroedter, Packer, and Dewey’s two hits a piece. Raap gave up just 5 hits and had a season best 7 strikeouts to even her record and 4 wins and 4 losses.

Sophomore Jessica Kohloff made her 3rd start of the season for the Raiders in game two, and unlike the other day, her defense was perfect behind her. Kohloff struck out 5 and allowed just 4 hits in a complete game effort in a 10-1 six inning win for her team.

Besides the 3 for 4, 4 RBI performance by Dewey in game two, the highlight of the game belonged to Iuelle who hit her 4th homerun of the season to lead off the 3rd inning. With that bomb over the left field fence, Iuelle set the career homerun record for GRCC with 15 total dingers. The previous record was held by Ashley Snider (14 in 2009) and assistant coach Michelle Racine (4 in 2004 and 10 in 2005).

GRCC will try and get back at .500 in the conference when they go back home on Saturday the 9th, to take on the Chargers of Ancilla College. Game time is 1:00 pm.
