GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For the second straight day, the visiting team got the best of the Raiders at a cold windy Belknap Park. This time it was former 1998-99 Raider Heather Sherwood’s team that was victorious, dropping the Raiders to four games below .500 (8-12, 2-4).
Both teams had 12 hits in game one of the doubleheader, but just like yesterday, the Raiders left way to many people on base (8) and could only manage 3 runs. The Jackson CC Jets leadoff hitter, Erika Bullock, was the MVP of the game. She went 4 for 5 with 3 homers and 4 RBI. She now has 5 homers in the week.
GRCC got on the board first with an infield hit by Brittany Frye in the first, scoring Marlene Packer, but they left 2 on base. They left 2 more on base in the 2nd and 3rd innings, and trailed 4-2. Adrienne Palmer’s run in the 4th made it a 4-3 ball game, but the Jet’s would catch fire in the 6th and 7th innings, scoring 5 runs on 6 hits to put the game away. Through the first 5 innings, Raider starter Ashley Raap allowed just 1 earned run.
Every Raider starter in game one, with the exception of Kellen Dewey (who had just one at bat) had a hit, with Frye, Brenna Donahue, Lindsey Schroedter, and Jessica Kohloff all having 2 hits a piece.
In game two, with the score tied at 1 in the top of the 4th, one swing of the bat busted the game wide open for the Jets (6-12, 6-2). And then the 5th inning, the Jet’s took advantage of four Raiders errors to put the nail in the coffin.
Starter Casey Cherry allowed just one run in the first 3 innings and had 2 outs on the Jets in the 4th before Sophomore catcher Lindsy Robison ripped a double to right center and scored 3 runs putting her team up 4-1. In the 5th inning, the Raiders replaced Cherry with Dewey, but the Raider “D” collapsed behind her. She would strike out the side, but four Raider errors lead to 5 unearned runs and left the Jet’s defense just 3 outs away from the victory. GRCC went down in order in the later of the inning and the ball game was over.
Schroedter and Alison Iuelle lead the offensive attack for the Raiders on the day. Schroedter, who was in the leadoff spot for the first time since early in Florida, went 4 for 7, while Iuelle finished the day 3 for 5.
The Raiders play again Tuesday, April 5th, at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Game time is 3:00pm.
