Raiders head to Delta for Lynn Conway Memorial Tournament

University Center, MI—The Raiders are gearing up to head to University Center Michigan to take part in the annual Lynn Conway Memorial Tournament. The guys are scheduled to take on Mid-Michigan Community College on Friday and Delta College on Saturday. Heading into the tournament the Raiders have earned a 4-3 record, and will look to stay on the right side of .500. The women will take on Cuyahoga CC and Delta College.

Mid-Michigan CC’s Lakers have found some early success this season. They’ve earned an impressive 10-4 record heading into the tournament, and appear to be one of the teams to beat. The Lakers have won 7 of their last 8 matches, and have heavily outscored their opponents. Last week the Lakers dealt losses to GRCC Rivals Cornerstone (79-49) and Muskegon CC (76-51).

Delta has a 3-2 record so far for the 2011-2012 season, and are on a 3 game winning streak. The Pioneers have recently earned victories over Kalamazoo Valley CC, Rochester JV, and Ancilla College. Leading the Pioneers is sophomore Jody Hill, who has posted an average of over 28 points per game and teammate Jakob Holland with an average of 9 rebounds per game and over 10 points per game.

The Raiders have been showing some superior play as of late as well. GRCC has won 3 straight games including 2 victories over Aquinas JV and one victory over Hope JV. The team has been led by Alex Lyle, who has posted an average of over 18 points per game, and Micah Gates with an average of over 10 points per game.

The women’s team will accompany the men on their way to the 2011 Lynn Conway Memorial Tournament, and will have some tough matches of their own. The Raiders take on Cuyahoga CC and Delta College.

Cuyahoga has an even 2-2 record this season. The team dropped their last game against Erie College, after earning a victory against Alfred State College. The Challengers have experienced some early season ups and downs, and hope to earn some victories at the tournament.

Early season woes seems to be the trend for the teams competing in the women's division of  this tournament, as Delta College is off to a rough start with a 2-4 record. The Raiders will hope to capitalize on their opponents struggles and earn a couple of victories to bring them to above the .500 mark.

GRCC is 3-4 this season, and have been led by Janele Johnson-Ellis and Destiney Robinson. The duo has posted a significant percentage of the Raiders scoring, and will be counted on for continued leadership.

Delta College hosts the Lynn Conway Memorial Tournament this weekend in University Center, MI. The tournament is slated to begin Friday morning and play continues through the weekend.
