Volleyball advances to NJCAA National Tournament

Grand Rapids, MI – GRCC’s Raider Volleyball team goes undefeated in the NJCAA Division XII District F Tournament hosted at GRCC’s Hunsburger Arena inside the Gerald R. Ford Fieldhouse. The Raiders wins have earned them a birth to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. 

The Raiders entered this weekend's tournament 28-5 ranked #12 in the NJCAA polls. 

During the course of the 2011 season the Raiders have accumulated 1311 kills, 1239 assists, 185 aces 751 digs, 137 solo blocks and 301 block assists.  

GRCC opened this year’s Regional Tournament with a bye as they were the first seed from the MCCAA.  Saturday the Raiders faced a tough fourth seed, Sinclair Community College.  Despite their tough play, the Tartans couldn’t stop the Raiders attack.  The Raiders won the match 3-0, (25-14, 25-9, 25-15).

The Raiders next faced 13th ranked MCCAA West rival Muskegon Community College.  The 2011 season paired the Raiders and the Jayhawks twice prior to this year’s Region XII Tournament.  In their first meeting of the year this September, the Jayhawks bested the Raiders in five sets.  The following match went to the Raiders 3-0.  Saturday the Raiders pulled off a 3-1 win to advance to the District F championship match.

In the District F championship match the Raiders faced Muskegon once again.  Following their loss to GRCC, Muskegon climbed out of the loser’s bracket with a win against Vincennes University to earn another shot to take down the Raiders.

The Raiders proved to be too much for the Jayhawks in the finals as they took down Muskegon for the 3rd time in 2011, 3-0 (25-17, 26-24 and 25-21).  Kelsey Darling led the Raiders in kills with 13.  Czehowski followed with 13 while Molly Maynard and Hannah Geelhoed combined for 12.

Kaitlyn Wolters led the team in assists with 38 of the 44 that the Raiders recorded while also recording. two aces.  Kendall Wolffis earned two aces of her own. 

Maynard led the team in blocks with 4;  Geelhoed earned 4  while Kourtney Wolters, Kaitlyn Wolters, Czehowski and Darling combined for 5 more.

In the match, the Raiders racked up 47 total kills with only 11 errors.

The NJCAA Division II National Tournament kicks off Thursday November 17th at Owens Community College in Toledo, OH.
