Volleyball wins MCCAA State Title

Box Score

The Western Raiders defeated the Eastern Raiders for the 2nd time this season to win the MCCAA Championship; their 2nd straight title and the 2nd ever at GRCC.  It was also just the 2nd time the #2 ranked Oakland CC Raiders have lost this season.  They were riding a 23 match win streak after their 5 set loss to GRCC  earlier this season.  The GRCC Raiders are now on an 11 match win streak and during that streak have lost just 2 sets, while winning 33.

In the finals GRCC got off to a 14-8 start before a 5 point Oakland run made it on point set.  After a timeout by Head Coach Chip Will, Oakland would serve the ball out of bounds and it was all GRCC from there.  GRCC ripped off 5 straight points of their own and wound up 24-19 winners.

In set 2, GRCC got off to a quick 12-4 start and never looked back.  A Kelsey Darling kill made it 20-10 and her team would win 25-20. Darling ended up with a team leading 13 kills in the match, including the match winner.

Oakland proved they weren't going to go away easily as they pretty much manhandled GRCC in set 3, leading by as many as 8 (20-12), but the Western Raiders made a few runs of their own and closed the gap to 23-24.  It was little too late though as Oakland prevailed to a 25-23 set victory.  GRCC had just 5 kills in the set, after having a total of 26 in the 1st two sets combined.  GRCC finished the match with 43 kills in the 4 set win.

In set 4, GRCC stepped their game back up and after a pretty even set early on.  It was 8-8, but a Molly Maynard kill made it 9-8 and GRCC never looked back.  GRCC ended the match on a 13-7 run to cap off their 2nd straight state title.

Freshman Kourtney Wolters played a Huge role for the Raiders in the championship match.  She put it her best play of the year in the 2nd set, where she had 3 kills, 3 aces, 2 blocks (including a solo) and stellar defensive play.  Wolters finished with a team high 6 aces in the match.  Her twin sister, Kaitlyn Wolters finished the match with 33 assists, including 10 each in sets 1 and 4.

Maynard and Hannah Geelhoed each had 9 kills and a total of 6 blocks, while Nicole Czehowski had 9 kills, 2 aces, and 2 blocks.

The #1 seeded Raiders will have one week off before they start action in the regional tournament. They received a 1st round bye and will play the winner of Jackson CC and Sinclair (OH) CC on Saturday morning at 10am.  The regional tournament is at GRCC's Ford Fieldhouse.
