Women’s Volleyball Gets Revenge and Goes to Nationals

For the Grand Rapids Community College Volleyball team, revenge could not be sweeter. On Saturday November 6, the team managed to defeat Muskegon Community College by a score of 3-1 (25-22, 25-2-, 21-25, 25-13) in their championship match that took place at Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

The Raiders finished their season 29-2 with only one loss in Western Conference play coming from Muskegon Community College on September 28.

Sydney VanMunster recorded a team high 16 kills and seven blocks against Muskegon, including seven kills and three blocks in the fourth game.

"We beat Muskegon at our home court in the regular season which was amazing revenge, but it was great to beat them again, especially for the championship. They're a great team and a great competition," VanMunster said. "Being ranked seventh in the nation, you sort of wear a target on your back and our coach always tells us that everyone makes it their goal to beat the winner, but we wear the target proudly and keep at it!"

VanMunster displays confidence in her team's abilities to succeed at the next level.

"Which ever team we face, all we have to do is play as a team and we are unstoppable. We have amazing coaches and we have worked really hard this season," said VanMunster.

The Raiders, who finished 13-1 in conference play, hosted the Region XII Division F Tournament at Ford Fieldhouse. They went on to win the three day tournament without losing a single set.

Charlie French, who celebrated her 19th birthday with the win, joined teammates Chloe McCotter and Kim Weaver on the All Tournament Team. Kim Weaver was also named Most Valuble Player.

Now for the third time in four years the Raiders go onto the National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin on November 18.

"None of these girls have been to nationals, so they were all excited to have that goal at the beginning of the season, and to achieve it was pretty special," said coach Chip Will in an interview with The Grand Rapids Press.
